STUFFED UP? HOUSE TOO DRY INSIDE? HOW DO YOU REMEDY THIS?

The use of essential oils as a therapeutic and healing practice can be traced as far back as 4000 BC.

Ancient Egyptians were the first masters in the therapeutic application of essential oils. They were also the first to extensively document their medicinal properties. Whether it was for religious, spiritual, therapeutic or social purposes, all events were recognized as important opportunities for the application and use of essential oils. After death, many essential oils were used due to their antiseptic and antifungal properties.

During the 14th century and the time of the black plague, herbs and oils were burnt both inside houses and outside to purify the air. Lavender was notable for its antiseptic, anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties and was used to sanitize at that time, as was pine, frankincense, rosemary and hops.

The early 1900’s mark another significant period, when the work of Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, a French chemist, earned him the title of the “Father of Aromatherapy”. He wrote several books on essential oils, citing cures for skin cancer, facial ulcers, gangrene and poisonous spider bites.

Today, the use of essential oils as a therapeutic tool in alternative medicine is seeing a resurgence. Application may vary, from absorption through the skin to inhalation via diffusion. Applying the essential oils topically, via carrier oil (e.g. Almond, Jojoba, Grapeseed Oil), allows the essence of the herb to be directly absorbed through the skin, sinuses, blood and lymph, exposing all organs and tissue to their therapeutic properties.

It is said that the use of aromatherapy and essential oils, keeps the autonomic nervous system balanced to maintain optimal immune response. Essential oils promote the release of neurotransmitters, facilitating the free flow of information through our psychosomatic networks to improve emotional health and strengthen self-identity (an important factor in the healing process).
