A recent scientific review published in the Chochrane Review, showed that individuals who take medications for moderately elevated blood pressure, don’t live longer that untreated individuals.

Another interesting large study published in 2009 in the American Heart Journal showed that three out every four heart attack patients have normal cholesterol at the time of the cardiac event. If cholesterol was the culprit of blockages in the arteries, wouldn’t it be “high” in every single heart attack occurrence? Well, the little known truth is that the real dietary causes of heart disease are sugar (including starchy foods) and trans fatty acids.

Off course most blood pressure meds as well as cholesterol-lowering meds don’t come without potential adverse effects. Some may contribute to development of diabetes, others may weaken the heart and contribute to congestive heart failure, yet others can cause fatigue and so on. The reason meds are often not an optimal long-term solution is that they don’t heal the cause. They merely treat the symptoms.

Unfortunately, doctors are not familiar with the use of vitamins and other nutrients in treating cardiovascular disease. The fact of the matter is that a number of natural agents have been shown to work well. For example, Vitamin C, Magnesium and Co enzyme Q10, have all been proven to produce a significant improvement in blood pressure. Magnesium and Vitamin C also act to limit body’s production of cholesterol, as well as improve intestinal elimination of excess cholesterol. All of these nutrients along with other antioxidants such as Vitamin E, A, Selenium and so on, prevent the oxidation of cholesterol, which could play a role in development of arterial plaque. Perhaps most important is the work of the late Nobel prize Laureate, Dr. Linus Pauling, who showed that by providing the body with adequate amounts of the amino acid Lysine, Proline, as well as Vitamin C, it is possible to reverse arterial plaque. Nutritional products containing all or most of these nutrients, such as CardioFlex are available at the Good Health Mart in Collingwood.
