You take a daily multivitamin but are you also taking a daily probiotic? You should be! There are over 500 types of bacteria in the digestive system and they weigh around 4 pounds (the weight of a brick!). The bacteria that grow naturally in the intestinal tract aid in the nourishment and defense not only of the digestive tract but of the whole body. These beneficial bacteria are known as PROBIOTICS but what do these bacteria do? Probiotics will:
- Help to control inflammation
- Support the immune system
- Maintain regularity and health of the bowel
- Synthesize certain B vitamins and vitamin K
- Produce digestive enzymes and aid in the absorption of calcium, magnesium and iron
- Help to keep yeast (candida), parasites and bad bacteria under control
Many things can upset the balance of good bacteria in our bodies. Medications, stress, hormonal changes, poor diet and nutrient deficiencies can decrease the population of probiotics in our bodies. The great news is that we can increase the friendly bacteria in our bodies by taking supplemental probiotics.
Which probiotic supplement is right for me?
With so many probiotic supplements on the market, finding one that is right for you can be confusing. There are two main probiotic strains that we are familiar with, Lactobacillus for the small intestine and Bifidobacteria for the colon. A good rule of thumb is to look for a multiple strain probiotic with lots of L’s for the “little” intestine and B’s for the “big” intestine. Always look for a probiotic supplement that is protected from the stomach acid with enteric coating. With today’s diet and lifestyle most adults would benefit from taking a high potency product, ideally 50 billion or more bacteria per capsule. Taking a daily probiotic supplement is one of the best things you can do for your health. Yogurt is not enough!
